Market Matters Snapshot

At the start of 2016, we identified a likely pull-back for the DOW of around 15%, to enable us to aggressively go long the Australian market. This unfolded as expected and Market Matters commenced accumulating quality stocks in the ASX 200 between the 4,700 and 4,800 range - the index has subsequently rallied over 15%.

Our belief at the time was that the last leg of the bull-market, that commenced back in 2009, was unfolding. Historically, stocks that have underperformed play catch up as the bull market has its last gasp of breath. Our view, in conjunction with a negative bias towards the US dollar, was that the resource sector was likely to gain some significant traction after a horrific few years.

For this reason, almost 60% of our purchases were resource based in this quarter, a sector that we had ignored over previous years.

This proved to be a very successful strategy in hindsight.
